Os noruegueses ALTAAR fazem parte de uma curta lista de bandas norueguesas que para mim estão no centro de uma especie de 3 vaga imaginaria no que ao BM diz respeito. Juntamente com Dodsengel, Mare ou o projeto Trinacria (espero ouvir algo novo em breve novamente) e mais uns poucos estão na linha da frente de uma renovação musical que centrando-se no BM desenvolve novas abordagens musicais.
Uns mais a fundo que outros é certo, mas ALTAAR e a julgar pela limitadissima demo Dødsønske, terão uma palavra a dizer nos proximos tempos.

Foi a mensagem deixada no facebook á poucos dias e mesmo ainda a procura de editora eu acredito que este trabalho vai surpreender muita gente.. Musicalmente e para quem não conhece a banda faz uma mistura de BM, Ambiente a puxar para o Drone com toques de Post daqueles bem negros usados por bandas como AmenRa. No ano passado a Paradigms Records enviou-me um daqueles mails que anunciam novos albuns e no meio da boa enxurrada que geralmente a editora assume vinha lá uma banda chamada Elitist. Descritos como Venomous doom grind horror os rapazes de Portland foram quase de imediato colocados debaixo de mira. A faixa que ouvi era muito boa e resolvi comprar o ep, mas quando recebi o ep fiquei com uma daquelas sensações que ficam entre o delicioso e o ohhh..muito devido á curtissima duração do registo (pouco mais de 12 minutos) mas onde se sentiu logo ai que esta banda ainda tinha algo para dizer no futuro. Pois bem o futuro é agora e desde que soube que tinham assinado pela Season of Mist, o Fear In A Handful Of Dust, tornou-se num dos albuns que mais aguardava, simplesmente porque aquilo que esperava era algo bruto e excelente. Ok, isto não significa que as coisas sejam ou se tornem realmente como expectamos, mas esta rapaziada não desiludiu e confirma aqui as boas indicações deixadas á um ano atrás. A sonoridade é violenta, mas com um toque de purismo extremo que geralmente não é muito usual encontrar nos dias de hoje, mesmo sendo este estilo ou melhor parte dele objeto de veneração por centenas de bandas. A diferença está é na forma como a banda consegue unir o lado podre do Sludge onde se notam referencias que vão desde EyeHateGod até uns Crowbar até explodirem numa especie de Death-Metal de contornos obscuros que destroiem tudo á volta. A Slowly Fucked And Force Fed é um bom exemplo daquilo que estou a falar imaginem o lado obscuro de uns Winter a pegar pelos colarinhos aqueles riffs lamacentos da movimento NOLA e a levanta-lo no ar com um sorriso totalmente demente nas trombas.. Mas se estas referencias adicionam algo mais, a base sonora continua envolta em nevoas escuras que muito devem a uns Converge (por ex) e aqui talvez não se entenda ainda muito bem aquilo que a banda realmente procura, mas usando esta formula o album torna-se num demoniaco registo carregado de odio e onde se destila veneno de varias formas e maneiras mas sempre com o objectivo mais que cumprido, sejam em faixas de um minutos sejam mas mais longas, estas mais ausentes.. A propria produção dá enfase aos temas criando por vezes a ideia que estamos frente a frente com banda e no seu espaço natural e o feedback das guitarras transmite a ideia que isto captado quase direto numa sala de ensaio. Ora para uma banda que consegue mostrar isto num album imagino o poder que não devem atirar num concerto ao vivo ainda mais com material deste calibre...deve ser uma experiencia bastante perigosa mesmo. Sem duvida um dos grandes albuns que ouvi este ano, não só porque conseguem unir as pontas de dois estilos que gosto bastante (Sludge e DM) mas porque conseguem fazer dessa união uma das mais interessantes jogadas musicais que iremos ouvir nos proximos meses e com resultados para lá de excelentes. A frase The Flames and The Fires Consume Our Soul berrada na Cult Malevolence resume por palavras aquilo que aqui se ouve neste fantastico album.. Arde lentamente e consome como as labaredas do Inferno e deixa um cheiro a enxofre tão nauseabundo que se torna quase perigoso colocar isto a rodar se estivermos fodidos com a vida..ora que mais se pode pedir? Nada, apenas piar fininho e deixa-los passar, mas se tiverem coragem de se colocarem á frente acreditem que vai doer e muito... Essencial. ELITIST - Human, All Too Human by Season of Mist
Now here is a real reason to get excited about the fall. Profound Lore Records have announced that they will be releasing the latest and greatest from cursed USBM enigma LEVIATHAN on November 8th. The album has been titled ‘True Traitor True Whore’ and will be the first release from the reactivated act since 2008′s ‘Massive Conspiracy Against All Life’. Much speculation was spreading throughout the underground as to whether or not we would ever see another LEVIATHAN record since Wrest (Jef Whitehead) had announced the band was finished after ‘Massive Conspiracy’ and then faced a terrible legal situation earlier this year.
For those unaware, Whitehead was arrested back in January and accused of sexual assault and battery against his then girlfriend. According to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times, Whitehead allegedly strangled the woman and sexually assaulted her with tattoo tools. Since then, questions regarding the woman’s credibility have been raised leading many to believe that Whitehead is innocent.
Whitehead’s friend and often collaborator BLAKE JUDD (NACHTMYSTIUM, TWILIGHT) was quoted in an interview with No Clean Singing as saying, “[It is] total bullshit. He didn’t do that. I saw a fight between him and that woman in my house before. It was the last confrontation they had. Drunk fucking retarded boyfriend-girlfriend fight. It was the last time they saw each other before that allegedly happened. I saw that woman beat her own head against the wall so that she would look beat up when the police showed up. He didn’t do anything to that woman. Jef Whitehead is a fucking maniac, but he is not a rapist. He is not a criminal. And the fact that the woman pressing the charges has ten different cases on file of dropping rape charges against boyfriends is going to get him scott free if he has the right lawyer. He is my brother. I have known him for eight years and he did not do that. I know that for a fact.”
From a personal perspective, I have also met Wrest on multiple occasions and I do not believe he did the things that he has been accused of. I also believe that he is one of the most important artists in the American black metal underground and I am highly anticipating ‘True Traitor True Whore’. The record was recorded with iconic Chicago metal leader Sanford Parker and we will most definitely keep you updated on everything that is announced regarding LEVIATHAN.

I first heard about FALSE while sitting around a coffee house in Madison, WI with Bryan and Andy from Thou. They had just played Minneapolis the night prior, where FALSE closer the show, and everyone in Thou was entirely and completely blown away by how intense and relentless FALSE were live. Just going off their description & the obvious impact left upon them, I knew I had to hear FALSE immediately. A couple months later I get an email from Bryan informing me that my long-time friend Adam Tucker was in the midst of mixing & mastering the FALSE recording for release. Tucker only puts a million % into everything he's a part of, so naturally I was thrilled. I'm sitting here now and listening to his mastered tracks as I write this, and I cannot wait to unleash this record upon the world with the band and Howling Mine records. FALSE bring us the best of what abrasive and relentless black metal can be. The two songs that make this 12" are fast paced, but with a purpose, and heavy on scathing (yet decipherable) vocals. Bryan and Andy kept telling me FALSE were the most relentless black metal band they'd ever seen. When you hear this record you'll know what they mean.
